At the Gates is a melodic death metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden, and a major progenitor of the Gothenburg death metal sound. Initially active from 1990 to 1996, the band reformed in 2007 for a reunion tour.
At the Gates was formed in 1990 by former members of the pioneering death metal band Grotesque. They recorded a debut EP, Gardens of Grief, for the Dolores record label, and sold cassettes, vinyls, and XL t-shirts to promote the recording. The EP led seminal metal label Peaceville Records to sign the band, and they released their debut full-length album, The Red in the Sky Is Ours, in 1992, an album with an eclectic sound, featuring for instance neoclassical arrangements and even a string solo.

Yes, another Swedish 70’s influenced hard rock band! I guess Sweden ranks no. 1 in the world when it comes to this genre. Horisont picks up where Witchcraft and Graveyard laid down the cornerstones and they are out on Crusher Records who also nurses Dead Man. So if you’re a sucker for music inspired by Pentagram, Blue Cheer and what not ….. and you dig denim and long haired guys this is a kick ass record. Horisont is all about blues rock and boogie with heavy riffing and long guitar solos. But also more Sabbath’ish inspiration may be heard in “The Unseen” which gives you everything from doomy atmosphere and slow riffing to beauty parts with killer vocal. Half the songs are with Swedish lyrics giving a cool feel to the songs and “Du Röde”...

The project's first demo was titled 'Erosive Offals'.
McWilliams departed prior to the second demo 'Pestiferous Anthropophagia' in 1990. General Sugery's line-up then virtually disintegrated, leaving only Kärki remaining. Cabeza soon returned to the fore with Dismember. New recruits were Afflicted guitarist Joacim Carlsson and drummer Matts Nordrup. Grant McWilliams also rejoined. General Suge...
