raison d'être (French for "reason to be") is a dark ambient project from Boxholm, Sweden, whose sole member has always been Peter Andersson.
Formed in 1991 as a tool of expression with the goal of self-realization and deeper knowledge of the inner Self. The music produced by raison d'être is chiefly dreamlike dark ambient soundscapes, with industrial touches. For example, synthesizers might play a droning melody over the sounds of metal on metal. Andersson often mixes Gregorian chants with his own keyboard and percussion playing.

The imagery involves death, obsession, child molestation, and psychosis. However, Karmanik never misses the opportunity to show the dark humorous side of his personality; his BDN persona switches between petulant spoiled-brat little girl and serial killer at the drop of a hat. Debut came in 1992 with the "Deflagration Of Hell" tape on Sound Source, sublabel of Cold Meat Industry, which was later reprinted on CD by Staalplaat. First CD release was "Benevolence" in 1993.
